Difficult conversations are part of education. Learn practical strategies to help educators approach tough student conversations with empathy, structure, and support.

In the education setting, it is inevitable that you will have to have difficult conversations with your students. This can be with the whole class, or 1:1 with an individual student. All we can do as educators is to try and make the conversations productive and positive. Here are some strategies that can help the conversation go as smoothly as possible.<h2>Step 1: Scripting</h2>The first step to have a successful conversation is scripting. It is a good idea to prepare an outline or bullet points that you want to cover during your conversation. Here are some ideas to solidify before the conversation:<ul><li>What is the issue/problem?</li><li>What is the impact of this problem? How has the student been affected and how are others being affected?</li><li>What do you want to change after this conversation?</li></ul> The script or points of your conversation are just as important as the way they are delivered. Be supportive and empathetic toward your student. Acknowledge how they feel and let them know that you are there for them. Difficult conversations can be scary for students but if you frame them from a place of support and care, the students might be more open to sharing their feelings. Ask them how you can help or what doesn’t help.&nbsp;<h2>Step 2: Prioritize Open-Ended Questions</h2>The next strategy to implement when having a difficult conversation is to prioritize open-ended questions. Some students may have difficulty expressing and verbalizing how they are feeling or what they are going through. Asking open-ended questions can help prompt the student to share their thoughts while also keeping the conversation focused on the issue at hand. If your student is not comfortable verbally communicating, offer them the chance to draw or write how they are feeling.&nbsp;Another important part of having difficult conversations is understanding that your student might need support beyond what you are able to give them. You may never know the root cause of problem behaviors. You should be aware of resources that are available to your student and who to contact if the situation is worse than you originally thought. Here are some resources to reach out to for specific needs:<ul><li>School Counselors</li><li>Food banks</li><li>Clothing drives</li></ul> If you are unsure what the next steps should be or what resources are available to students, contact your school administration. If there are any signs of child abuse or neglect, report those concerns to Child Protective Services immediately.&nbsp;<h2>Step 3: Close with Positivity</h2>Finally, close the conversation with positivity. Remind your student that you are there for them and that you believe in them. Tell them you appreciate them being willing to share how they feel. Ending the conversation with a clear reminder that you are not mad, and that you are not going anywhere will reassure the student and set you both up for a continued, positive relationship.
